The practice of making AI systems understandable—disclosing how they work, what data they use, and how decisions are made.

AI transparency means making artificial intelligence systems understandable to users, regulators, and affected parties—explaining what they do and how.

Dimensions

  • Technical: How the model works (architecture, training)
  • Data: What information was used to train it
  • Decisional: Why specific outputs were generated
  • Operational: How it’s deployed and monitored

Why It Matters

  • Accountability: Can’t fix what you can’t see
  • Trust: Users need to understand AI decisions affecting them
  • Regulation: Laws increasingly require explainability
